For the seventh consecutive year, representatives of the world’s various watchmaking associations met in Basel on 1st April at the invitation of the FH.

The conference brought together 23 people representing associations from the following countries: Germany, China, France, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and of course Switzerland. It should be noted that the American Watch Association sent its excuses, while the new Indian association, the All India Federation of Horological Industries, took part in the event for the first time.

Those present firstly exchanged information on the general trend of the industry which, on the world stage, is holding up reasonably well. The Hong Kong watch industry, for example, registered an upturn in its exports of 9.0% last year, while the increase for China was 4.3%. Watchmaking associations have agreed to exchange statistical information on a regular basis.

The participants then reaffirmed their support for harmonisation of rules of origin at a global level, a current topic of negotiations within the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The latter are making slow progress, in view of the general tenor of discussions in the WTO. Some associations took the opportunity to note that the origin of the watch must take into account final assembly, which plays an important role in the quality of the finished product.

The delegations then condemned counterfeiting once again and noted that it would be useful to set up panels on the Baselworld model at other watch industry exhibitions. The representatives of Hong Kong pointed out the role of their respective organisations in encouraging their members to respect intellectual property rights. They conduct inspections of stands before exhibitions open, whether they are held in Basel or Hong Kong.

Regarding customs duties, which have always been and continue to be an important problem for the watch industry, participants reaffirmed their desire to reduce them in order to facilitate trade. On this point, the Indian delegation mentioned approaches it had made to the authorities of its country, not only to reduce customs duties, but also to cut local taxes and simplify the fiscal system. India has demonstrated a willingness to go down the path of simplification, particularly with the recent introduction of VAT, but it must be admitted that its implementation throughout the country will take several more years.

Next, the French delegation aired its concerns over the fall in price of basic electronic movements, which it would appear have fallen by 15% in one year, a worrying phenomenon which could lead European associations to bring the matter before the community authorities with a view to possible anti-dumping measures. In fact, it seems that the fall in price depends on the market, which is suffering from overproduction. It may also be due to the technological advances of recent years.

Lastly, the delegations expressed their concern over the emergence of new European legislation concerning health and the environment. This legislation is liable to affect the watch sector disproportionately, in view of the small quantities of heavy metals used in our industry. One example is the new directive on dangerous substances, which seeks to prohibit the use of lead in electronic products from 1st July 2006 and which could affect electronic movements, since their soldered components still contain lead.

By way of conclusion, the delegations emphasised the importance of these informal meetings that provide an opportunity to share views on subjects of common interest. No time was lost therefore in scheduling the next meeting for Baselworld 2006.

121TimeStéphane Lambiel Ambassador

Stéphane Lambiel, the new artistic ice-skating world champion, has joined 121Time as a representative, but also as a designer.

Lambiel and the watch manufacturer from Martigny share the same boldness and creative strength that drive success. "That is why we are very proud of this partnership with Stéphane and are looking forward to taking part in joint activities and supporting him in his dream to stand on the podium at the 2006 Turin Olympic Games," said Daniel Morf, Marketing Director of the watchmaking firm based in the canton of Valais. In the store www.121time.com, a Stéphane Lambiel collection will be unveiled at the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the artistic ice-skating world champion has already started work as a designer by creating his own watch on the aforementioned Internet site, which, thanks to its unique technology, allows anyone to design the timepiece of their dreams. Stéphane Lambiel thus joins other famous designers appearing on the site.

After steadying the helm in 2003, the Richemont group surged forward last year, with profits rising strongly.

It should be recalled that 2002 had not been a positive year for Richemont, with turnover down by 5% and operating and net results dropping respectively by 46 and 22%. This was a reflection of the economic and political uncertainties following September 11, 2001, and the ensuing contraction of tourism coupled with the atypical pneumonia epidemic. However, the Geneva luxury products group faced all its problems squarely and improved its profit situation in 2003 – +14 and +3% respectively – despite the continuing drop in sales (-8%).

The improvement continued during the 2004 – 2005 financial year, which closed at the end of last March. Sales again began to rise (+10%, to 3,717 million euro), while profits exploded: +71%, to 505 million, for the operating result and +33%, to 881 million, for the net result. The latter includes 468 million from Richemont’s holding in the BAT (British American Tobacco) group, which rose by 11%, and 413 million (+74%) from the activities of the group’s subsidiaries.

With regard to operating results, we should highlight the performance of the group’s jewellers – above all Cartier, but also Van Cleef & Arpels – with a profit of 460 million euro (+25%), while the profits of the watchmaking firms – Baume & Mercier, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, A. Lange & Söhne, Panerai, Piaget and Vacheron Constantin – grew by 56%, to 148 million. As for the makers of writing instruments – Montblanc and Montegrappa – their operating results grew by 7%, to 59 million. The only cloud on the horizon is the situation affecting the companies – Dunhill and Lancel – active in leather goods and household accessories, which hardly improved at all, with a loss of 40 million, against 42 million in 2003 – 2004. Starting from 31st March next, Christopher Colfer will be replacing Simon Critchell as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dunhill, following the latter’s resignation. He will have a difficult task before him, as will his colleague at Lancel to whom the Chairman, Johann Rupert, and the General Manager of the Norbert Platt group have entrusted the mission of making Lancel a world-class brand.

The group is nonetheless optimistic for the current financial year. The months of April and May, with a progress in sales of 15%, were a continuation of the first quarter of 2005. In particular, the watchmaking businesses continued to make great progress. At the level of markets, the Asia-Pacific region and the American continent remain the driving forces of growth, but Europe is not very far behind, with a two-digit increase in sales during the same months. In other words, if no unforeseen negative external event occurs, the 2005 – 2006 financial year should once again be largely positive for the world’s number two in luxury products.

TIME FLOATS extends an invitation to peruse new and exciting horological creations from independent watch brands Golay Spierer, HD3 Complication, and Instruments & Mesures du Temps. The presentations will occur over the course of April 9-April 11, 2008 aboard the moored “Savoie” steamer at the Quai de Paquis, in Geneva. The continuous reception will take place each day of the event, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.Shop By Replica Watches CollectionRelated articles in Fashion Watches newsMilus APIANA Chronograph Haute Joaillerie WatchDeWitt Academia Tourbillon Force Constante a Chaine Watch

The Zenith Star Open Heart El Primero Wild watch radiates exotic beauty and the appeal of untamed emotions. Superbly crafted in the best Swiss tradition, this Zenith timepiece is a spectacular creation of feminine expression as well as a prestigious accomplishment of the watchmaking arts. Suggestive of the pattern found on a jungle cat, the Zenith Star Open Heart Wild watch and its uniquely colored dial and strap make a stunning statement of individualistic elegance. Charming, whimsical touches are also found in the boldly rendered Breguet-style Arabic numerals, and of course, the curvaceous heart aperture in the dial, which reveals the fascinating “heart” of the Zenith El Primero mechanical chronograph movement. Imaginative souls will smile at the amorous inscription along the power-reserve indicator, which suggests that the energy stored in the mechanism can be compared to the ardor of a lovers beating heart. This theme continues in yet another detail: in lieu of the normal subsidiary seconds hand, a small heart turns continually to indicate the passing seconds. The Zenith Star Open Heart Wild watch is animated by one of the most celebrated chronograph movements ever made. A descendant of a movement first introduced by Zenith to critical acclaim in 1969, the El Primero 4021 caliber features a classically integrated column-wheel controlled chronograph with a 30-minute totalizer. Like all Zenith chronograph calibers, this movement is distinguished by its extraordinarily rapid balance wheel frequency, and its high quality construction. Fully wound, this automatic movement has a power reserve of 50 hours, the status of which can be easily realized by looking at the previously mentioned “Love indicator”. Female connoisseurs will surely be pleased by the sapphire crystal window in the caseback which allows a full glimpse into this fascinating mechanism, which is comprised of well over 200 individual pieces within a space of just 7.75 millimeters. This breathtaking Zenith timepiece is available in both 18K rose gold and stainless steel, in versions with or without a diamond-set bezel. The unique patterned leather straps which complete each Star Open Heart Wild watch is fitted with a signed triple deployant clasp in 18K gold or stainless steel. An IWC timepiece was a quiet co-star at the July 14th premiere of The Dark Knight on July 14th, in New York City. The brand’s classic Portuguese Chrono-Automatic watch made an elegant impression upon the wrist of 38-year old Singaporean actor-director Ng Chin Han, who plays mob accountant Lau in the film. Standing alongside with co-stars Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman, Chin Han expressed his pleasure in being able to work with such an illustrious cast, as well as have the opportunity to experience the many cutting-edge contraptions featured on the set, the Bat Bunker in particular. Prior to impressing Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan and securing his breakthrough role, Ng Chin Han steadily built his career in a range of supporting roles in various independent films; he has also lent his directorial skills to plays and musical adaptations. The actor was first introduced to Singapore audiences in 1994, when he appeared in the English-language television drama “Masters of the Sea”.Shop By IWC CollectionRelated articles in IWC newsIWC Announces Pilot’s watch “Father and Son” watch setIWC And Eva Longoria Partner For Make-A-Wish Charity Auction In Paris
